The hunting grounds are located in South-West Ireland, in West Cork county.
Idealy placed near the ocean, and migrating birds wintering grounds, it is easily reachable by visitors too, being an hour away from Cork airport and three hours from Cherbourg-Rosslare ferry.
My hunting rights are distributed over several contiguous areas from 100 ha to 500 ha, that allows for hunting for several days, for a single group at a time enjoying the exclusivity of the grounds during their stay.
You won’t have to deal with third parties or subcontractors, as I deal myself with formalities, welcoming and guiding you. This allows for quality, flexibility and conviviality.

Hunting with pointing dogs in Ireland

Hunting woodcock and snipe in Ireland is mainly done with pointing dogs, but flushing and hawking dog users are welcome as well.
Our stays are meant for hunting parties composed of friends and family with a maximum of five people per group.
I own 3 English setters that can provide a variety with other dogs, or for those who come for short stays (2 to 3 days).
4-to-6 days stay are indicated for those who want to hunt with their own dogs, with mine as a complement.
The hunting grounds are diverse, with a mid-mountian landscape, sometimes rough and uneven, with mostly fir forest and moor lands.
I welcome few people every season by choice. It allows for a much better contact and share with hunters and their companions.
Regarding bird density per hunting day, it varies from 7 to 20 different woodcocks, sometimes 30 or more. But upping the ante and mouthwatering numbers is not our goal, and I do think a hunting session delivering 15 + birds is a great session. Let us not forget that we are using pointing dogs, this isn’t a driven hunt and birds can defend themselves.
It is noteworthy to know that I was the first operator to publish a  report of every season with every group I guided. It is available here: report
It shows truthfully every hunting season, wether good or bad, which is the reality of hunting migratory species.

Non-hunter companions in Ireland

Companions are very much welcome, and there are visits and hikes aplenty in the surroundings. For example, you could discover the towns and villages along the coast line, the 3 peninsulas (Mizen Head, Sheep’s Head and Beara) as well as the history-rich town of Cork.
According to your wishes, I can provide ideas, maps and information throughout your stay.

Woodcock / Snipe pointing dogs training (no hunting)

It is possible as well to break-in or train your dog on woodcocks (from february to march) and snipes (from september to october and february to march).

These stays are planned according to your wishes with a mix of training, tourism and sport fishing (trout or pike, depending on the season).

Training sessions are taking place without guns, accompanied by myself on the grounds, and we’ll only bring dog and birds together.

Contact me through either phone or contact form to plan this together.

Bringing your dog to Ireland:

There is no quarantine anymore since 2011. Transportation has to be through ferry from Cherbourg or Roscoff. Some companies have dogs travel for free, Stena Ferry is one of them. More information here: link (in French)
Your dog must have a EU pet passport to travel. It must have a microchip for identification and treated for ticks and tapeworm as part of the Pets Travel Scheme (PETS). Vaccination against rabies must occur at least 21 days before departure. Ask your veterinarian for advice before departure.

Hunting advice for Ireland

Use of tracking collar is a must, beacuse of the windy grounds and the difficulty to see your dog. I personally use the Dogtra 2500 TB model, but other similar devices will work just as well.

Guns and ammunition

Bring your usual 12, 16 or 20 calibre gun, and try to avoid bringing too expensive a weapon, as they are not designed to withstand Irish damp.
Smooth or slightly chambered (1/4) barrels are well suited and allow for a more efficient grouping of fire between 15 and 25 m.
7 to 9-lead cartridges  are perfect, but I do advise to bring your own, for catridge choice is fairly limited to wads here in Ireland.

Clothing and footwear

We recommend tear-resistant hiking pants, because fishing waders can be inconvenient on waterlogged grounds.
Same thing applies to waxed jackets, often too heavy and leading to perspiration.
A hat/cap is always useful, and a good pair of boots / quality leg straps (Le Chameau or Aigle, as French brands go) is a must.
And don’t forget your camera, of course !
